In 1979 artist and writer Sophia Healy founded a hand papermaking studio in nearby White Creek, New York.Trout Paper earned its name from the plentiful brook and brown trout that swim in the nearby creek. The studio sits at the edge of a heifer pasture, fronted by an informal garden and the trademark clothesline for drying felts. The artists in this exhibit – – Monica d. Church, Alba De Leon, Denise Suska Green, Sophia Healy and Elisa Lanzi came to White Creek in the summers to make handmade paper art works.
Located on the Vermont/New York border, the “Crik’” was the hub for the artists to work and play. As they gardened, swam, and picked blackberries, the essence of the creek made its way into their papermaking. When the artists returned to their various hometowns that spirit showed up in other media – sculpture, textiles, printmaking, photography, and poetry.
