The turn of the year is both a summing up (how did we do in 2016?) and a forecast (where are we going in 2017?). We are overrun with data at that time of year – – economic indicators, climate alerts, consumer indices, etc. But data points are real people in real places. “Worst Annual Death Toll Ever: Mediterranean Claims 5,000 Migrants” [article] is unfathomable and unforgettable.
My grandparents were immigrants from that part of the world. Sicily’s history is replete with migration, destination, and settlement for multiple cultures. But, the seductive blue Mediterranean has cruelly played with her most vulnerable passengers since ancient times.
I dedicate my recent print series, “Migrant Season” to those refugees of today who embark on the most dangerous journey. A selection of these prints are also on view in my Zea Mays flat file Portfolio.
